A message from Dr. Cody Capeloto, Doctor of Chiropractic
Pregnancy is a period of profound and rapid transformation for the body. As your baby grows, your anatomy adapts in remarkable ways. One common experience during this time, particularly in the second trimester, is a sensation often referred to as round ligament pain. Understanding what this sensation is and, more importantly, when to communicate with your primary obstetric provider is a key part of navigating your pregnancy with confidence.
The round ligaments are a pair of cord-like structures in the pelvis that connect the front of the uterus to the groin. Before pregnancy, they are short and thick. As the uterus expands, these ligaments must stretch and thin out to accommodate the new size and weight. This stretching can lead to distinct sensations.
As a general principle, any new, persistent, or concerning pain experienced during pregnancy should be discussed with your primary obstetric clinician, such as an OB/GYN or midwife. While many sensations are a typical part of pregnancy, only a qualified medical provider can differentiate between common discomforts and signs that may require medical evaluation. It is especially important to seek prompt medical attention if your pain is severe, constant, or accompanied by other symptoms like fever, bleeding, or contractions.
Understanding the Sensation
The sensation associated with the round ligaments is often described as a sharp, sudden, jabbing feeling in the lower abdomen or groin area. It can occur on one or both sides, though it is frequently reported on the right side. The feeling is typically brief, lasting only a few seconds, and is often triggered by sudden movements, such as:
- Standing up too quickly
- Rolling over in bed
- Coughing or sneezing
- Laughing
This quick, sharp sensation occurs because the already-stretched ligaments are forced to contract or tighten rapidly, similar to a rubber band being snapped. While startling, this brief discomfort is a widely documented aspect of pregnancy anatomy.
Signs That Warrant Medical Consultation
Your obstetrician or midwife is your primary partner in health throughout your pregnancy. They are the only professionals qualified to diagnose your condition and ensure the well-being of you and your baby. It is vital to contact them immediately if you experience pain that is different from the brief, sharp sensation described above. Be sure to discuss any pain with your provider, especially if it is accompanied by:
- Severe, intense, or constant pain that does not go away with rest
- Pain accompanied by fever, chills, nausea, or vomiting
- A burning sensation or pain during urination
- Any vaginal bleeding, spotting, or unusual changes in discharge
- Rhythmic, cramping pains that may indicate uterine contractions
- Noticeable pressure in the pelvic area or a feeling that the baby is pushing down
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, or headache
These symptoms are not characteristic of typical round ligament sensations and require a thorough medical evaluation by your obstetric team.
Your Healthcare Team
Navigating pregnancy involves a team of professionals, each with a specific role. Your obstetrician or midwife is the leader of this team, responsible for all medical aspects of your pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Open and honest communication with them is essential. No question is too small, and no concern is unimportant. At Alive & Free Chiropractic, we believe in empowering individuals with education about the body.
